The Best Bags for Spring 2020 from Budget to Designer

I have been eyeing a new bag now for about six months, cautiously contemplating my options. Ever is no longer a baby and so I don’t feel the need to carry around quite so much stuff. My current every day bag is so large that it turns into a catchall and I find myself cleaning it out every weekend wondering how some of the contents ever got there in the first place. I want a bag with a zipper closure at the top, large enough to carry two kids water bottles, a wallet, phone and some small odds and ends without too much space beyond that and I want it under $500.  I’ll share the one I think I’m going to get below, but all of that to say, I’ve done a ton of bag research. Now that I feel like a Spring 2020 bag expert, I thought I would share my top 5 bags in every price point in case you’re also in the market looking for a new bag!

Best Spring 2020 Bags Under $275:

The Best Everyday Bag:

Cuyana Medium Carryall Tote in Black

What to Love About this Bag:

This bag actually checks all of my needs. It’s not too big and not too small. It’s a tote that can fit a 13″ laptop as well as your other everyday essentials. The best part? It has a zipper! Actually the best part is that this is such a high quality bag at this price point. It’s hard to beat!

The Best Fun Bag:

Madewell Slim Brooklyn Crossbody Bag in Yellow

What to Love About this Bag:

The tortoise shell chain and yellow color separate it from all of it’s brown and black counterparts making it equal parts fun, but in a way that’s still timeless. It may be slim, but it’s deep enough to actually be quite useful, too. This bag will hold a wallet, phone and your favorite paperback book you’re reading no problem.

The Best Evening Bag:

Staud Mini Shirley Bag in Cognac

What to Love About this Bag:

The hardest part about writing this post was choosing which Staud bag to include. They can do NO wrong and I would gladly take a closetful of each and every one of their bags. (You can see them all here.) I love that the Mini Shirley has the removeable pouch where all of your important belongings can stay safely zipped up within your cool modern mini-tote. The optional cross-body strap also makes it the perfect bag to go from day to night. This cognac leather skews red and I love the tones! It’s a goes-with-anything kind of color that’s not at all boring.

The Best Travel Bag:

Calpak Kaya Faux Leather Laptop Backpack in Stone

What to Love About this Bag:

I am very interested in this bag becoming my new carry on bag and might just have to purchase before our February Palm Springs trip. I love the multiple zippers into separate areas of the backpack. There’s a large front section and large back section so everything stays orderly. (Within those two compartments there’s even more separation and sleeves!) It has a large leather section on the back of the backpack that allows it to slip onto the handle of your roller bag making it THE most convenient carry-on bag you could ever hope to own. Plus, it’s really beautiful and priced at just $100! OBSESSED with this bag!

The Best Beach Tote:

Hat Attack Launch Tote in Solid Linen

What to Love About this Bag:

The wide, rectangular bottom makes it ideal for packing up bento boxes, towels, a bottle of kombucha, your favorite novel and so much more! I love the heavy texture of the linen and the design that instantly goes from beach to lunch date without skipping a beat.

Best Spring 2020 Bags Under $500:

The Best Everyday Bag:

Clare V Attaché bag in Loden Croc

What to Love About this Bag:

This is the bag I just ordered on Friday after contemplating the purchase for 6+ months! I love the size. I love the zippered top. I love that the croc leather looks super durable and will be able to withstand my life with kids. I also bought this strap to go with it and make it a little more casual for everyday.  (PS. You can use this code for $25 off your Clare V purchase!)

The Best Fun Bag:

Mansur Gavriel Lamb Double Zip Crossbody in Blush

What to Love About this Bag:

This is not an everyday bag, not for me. What it is, though, is the perfect bag for when I’m kid-free running around town. It’s also the perfect bag for vacation when you want to leave the hotel with nothing more than your iPhone, wallet and a pair of sunnies. The hardest part about featuring this bag was choosing between the blush color shown here or this hue. OMG! Which would you choose?

The Best Evening Bag:

Emily Levine Notto Knotted Silk Satin Tote

What to Love About this Bag:

What’s not to love about this bag? It’s so chic. It feels timeless and pretty. It’s perfectly suited to black tie, but is actually really perfect with a pair of jeans and you’re favorite tee, too.

The Best Travel Bag:

Paravel Main Line Duffel Weekender Bag

What to Love About this Bag:

This bag is made from water-resistant canvas and has sturdy leather straps making it just as durable as it is classic and elegant. The perfectly situated gold feet protect the base from getting dirty and the main compartment has two zipped pockets to keep contents where they need to be. There’s also an attachable shoulder strap should you need to go hands-free.

The Best Beach Tote:

Cult Gaia Banu Bag in Natural

What to Love About this Bag:

Few people create unique, one-of-a-kind styles like Cult Gaia does. This bag is equal parts practical (plenty of room to be worn on your should, plus an extra spacious interior) and art. That texture! Those pleats! The bamboo handle! This is a beach bag that you’ll find yourself using all summer long for many years to come.

Best Spring 2020 Bags Under $1500:

The Best Everyday Bag:

Stella McCartney Falabella Medium Reversible Faux-Leather Tote in Black

What to Love About this Bag:

Stella first introduced this style in 2010 and it continues to stand the test of time. This is a bag you’ll be wearing and loving for decades to come. The whipstitched chain gives it an edgy detail that many everyday bags lack and the interior is roomy enough for all of your essentials and then some.

The Best Fun Bag:

Mansur Gavriel Brandy Pleated Bucket Bag

What to Love About this Bag:

Just when it seems that bucket bags have reached their max amount of iterations, Mansur Gavriel (the designer who is quite possibly responsible for the resurgence of the bucket bag) gives us this pleated version. It feels classic, architectural and fun all at the same time.

The Best Evening Bag:

Chylak Vintage Clasp Glossed Croc-effect Leather Tote in Black

What to Love About this Bag:

All of Zofia Chylak’s vintage-inspired bags have me drooling right now. I love this one in particular for it’s classic silhouette re-imagined in a larger size. It’s perfect for a dinner party or gala but actually quite practical for a daytime business meeting as well when styled right.

The Best Travel Bag:

Gucci Ophidia Small Suede Belt Bag

What to Love About this Bag:

The signature Gucci web stripes and gold hardware take this bag to the next level. This hands-free bag keeps the essentials I really need when getting through the airport with two kids at my fingertips without having to stop, unzip and shuffle through an overly stuffed backpack or tote.

The Best Beach Tote:

Chloe Medium Marcie Leather and Raffia Tote

What to Love About this Bag:

In a sea of straw bags this summer, this one stands out from the rest. The elegant leather details in that signature Chloe shade of brown make this iconic bag a must for this season. (I’m imagining it with this dress and these shoes.)
