Drinks are not like children. It is perfectly okay to choose a favorite– or to create a favorite that supersedes all other drinks you may have dabbled with in seasons past. This drink is not just my current favorite, this drink is my cocktail spirit animal. It combines the scent and taste of citrus which instantly transports me back to sunny California (and more specifically the ‘Soarin’ Over California’ ride at California Adventure, with a classic cocktail that fully appeals to my Austin, Texas roots and a splash of the greatest liqueur, St. Germain.
If you follow my IG stories then you already know I spent a lot of time recipe testing this. I went with the version that has no simple syrup in it, but if you want something sweeter just add a splash. (Simple syrup is seriously so easy– for cocktails you don’t even need to do it on the stovetop. Just get your sink water to it’s hottest point and combine equal parts sugar and water, stirring to combine.)Print
yield: one cocktail
- 2 blood oranges (1/2 c. of fresh squeezed blood orange juice)
- 1/4 c. tequila
- 1 tbsp. St. Germain liqueur
- 1 tbsp. kosher salt
- rosemary for garnish (optional)
Juice the blood oranges and set aside.
Add the salt to the juicy cutting board and combine and set aside. It really doesn’t require very much juice at all to add the citrus flavor and the pink color. Too much juice and your salt will start to dissolve. Run the fleshy part of a squeezed orange along the rim of your glass and then tip the glass over on the cutting board to add the salt to is.
Add the juice, tequila, and liqueur to the glass. Stir to combine.
Add ice and garnish.
