Everyone says motherhood changes your life... and they're right. Getting out of the house now is like an obstacle course of mental checklists and bouncing from room to room with her on my hip, gathering our necessities. We spend twice as much time as the farmer's market because of Parker's meandering pace and desire to try all of the samples! I take shorter showers, spend less time fixing my hair, and no longer get to sleep in just because we stayed out too late with friends. I squeeze more work into less hours and think of her constantly when I'm away. She's the reason that I have streamlined everything from my closet to my beauty routine. She has taught me that less is more and the paradox of the whole thing is that I wouldn't trade my new way of life for the old! Every experience is heightened because she is a part of it and even small delights feel like big indulgences.
The things I'm delighting in lately? Fresh dahlias by my bedside, my morning almond milk lattes, the foundation brush I just started using (how have I never used a foundation brush before?!), bright lip colors for summer, and this new AERIN Beauty Amber Musk perfume. Up until discovering this scent a few weeks ago, I honestly hadn't worn perfume since Parker was born. When she was really small I was afraid that it would irritate her skin and I just got out of the habit. I've been putting it on in the mornings and even before bed! It's really light and just feels like me right now. It's a simple reminder every time I catch a glimpse of it throughout the day that I did a little something for myself. An every day sort of indulgence!
Lately, I have been challenging myself to enjoy and savor everything she does. The way she can pause and smell a flower and then hop around with glee at the whole experience is contagious! The way she can bite into a piece of ripe stone fruit and then squeal with delight makes me laugh at loud. In the mornings when I'm getting ready, she always reaches for my make up brushes, so I finally bought Parker her very own set. Now as I sit and get ready for the day, she stands next to me and runs the brushes over her face, and through her hair. Sometimes she's very serious about it and sometimes she grins and catches my glance as she does it.
