China Bound

Models present creations during the Fend

Happy weekend, friends!  Do you have big plans? I mentioned in this post that I am in Austin for the weekend.  Last night we celebrated with my sister and toasted her graduation, first at Second Bar + Kitchen, and then later at the Driscoll Bar.  Last week Aaron and I booked a trip to China this summer!  It was kind of a surprise destination.  One minute we were talking about how cool it would be to stand on top of the great wall of China and a week later we bought plane tickets!  Have you ever been before?  I have been a little obsessed with The Great Wall ever since Karl Lagerfeld hosted a Fendi runway show there.  Coolest runway venue ever, right?  We are doing Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai and would love any recommendations!

Hotels?  Restaurants?  Places to see?  I am super excited!  Have a great weekend!

  1. I’m so excited for you to go to China! My husband and I were there in February and although it was chilly, we had a great time exploring Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. We blogged about it on our travel blog here if you wanted any recommendations!

I spent a month in China a few years ago, based in Bejing, and visited Shanghai and X’ian. HIGHLY recommend Pure Lotus restaurant in Beijing (I have traveled the world and this place ranks as one of my favorites). Also recommend Capital M restaurant in Beijing. Make sure to sit on the terrace. For art, make sure you go to 798 Art Zone in Beijing, very cool place to spend the afternoon. And two days in X’ian is more than enough. Have fun! I loved China and cannot wait to go back! Oh, make sure you bring a Chinese-English dictionary. Do not expect the taxi drivers, etc., to know english.

This is so incredibly helpful, Kristen! Thank you so much! I have heard that 798 is a really cool area. There are a few hotels out there that I was looking into, but am nervous that it’s a little too far out from the city center. What do you think? Thanks for the tips!

You’re welcome! Beijing has a great subway system, but I do not remember if there was one by 798. We took a cab there. I mention the subway, because it is the best way to get around Beijing and the most economical. Otherwise, the dollar is so strong over there, it is not a big deal to take a cab to the city center. It just depends on the kind of experience you want, close to the city center/tourist attractions, or cool funky area and a little bit of a hike.

  3. Hi, stay at the Opposite House in Beijing! And go to the Chinese restaurant in Ritan Park for dinner, I forget the name. In Shanghai stay at The Langham or the Urbn Hotel and make sure you check out the boutiques and restaurants on Anfu Lu and Xinle Lu! And go to the Glamour Bar! And delicious Chinese food at Guyi. Also go to 580 Nanjing Lu – 3rd floor for knockoffs. Have a great trip.
