Our 11 Favorite Breakfast Tacos in Austin

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 2006, I was constantly walking into Mexican restaurants and asking for breakfast tacos.  Here in Austin it’s near a dietary staple, but there people looked at me like I had just tried to order prescription medication.  Breakfast burritos abound, but a taco? You’re out of luck.  Here’s why tacos are so much better than burritos: Instead of big bites of tortilla at either end with sloppy goops of filling in between, you get perfectly proportioned bites of everything inside.  You literally can’t throw a rock in Austin without hitting a restaurant that serves breakfast tacos, so asking someone to pick just one of their favorite breakfast tacos in Austin is kind of like asking me to pick my favorite pair of shoes. There are different things I like about all of them– don’t make me choose! However, that’s exactly what we did. We pooled over 12 of our favorite Austinites for their favorite breakfast tacos in Austin, so that should you pop into the live music capital of the world any time soon, you’ll know exactly where to direct your Ride driver (Austin’s own version of Uber).

My very, very favorite breakfast tacos in Austin are from Picnik.  There’s a north and south location and the entire place is gluten, corn, and soy free. Plus they only cook with coconut oil, so it’s guilt-free dining at it’s best!  The eggs and bacon taco that comes served with the most delicious tomatillo salsa is my favorite, with the chorizo being a close second! To make them even more delicious, they’re served on cassava root and coconut tortillas. (Photo via Instagram)

Which brings us to our Tacodeli section of the post. Five for the people pooled said that Tacodeli was their favorite taco!

Anne Campbell, Margaret Williams, and Jackie Cryan all site the Popeye as their favorite! (Margaret recommends adding Chorizo! Meanwhile Jaclyn Dowdle‘s fave is the Otto. The Jess Special is the favorite of Camille Styles and my own personal runner-up!
